Last week, Chief and Council, together with Administration, attended the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Convention as invited guests of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

UBCM 2025 – Summary of Meetings with Provincial Leadership
During the UBCM Convention, Chief and Council, along with Administration, held a series of important meetings with key ministers of the Provincial Government on a range of important topics, including infrastructure development, housing supports, community connectivity, and major projects impacting our territory.
Below is a summary of the discussions held:
- Hon. Premier David Eby
We discussed progress on the approval of design funding, energy initiatives, and key emergency management concerns impacting our community. - Hon. Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food
We requested funding to support the development of an on-reserve greenhouse and a meat processing facility to enhance food sovereignty and economic opportunity. - Hon. Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly
We engaged in dialogue on effective reconciliation practices and their implementation at the Government level. - Hon. Jessie Sunner, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills
We highlighted the ongoing expenditure gap between Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) funding and our community’s actual needs, and requested the Ministry’s involvement in bridging this gap. - Hon. Kelly Greene, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness
We presented our bridge infrastructure needs through the lens of emergency preparedness. The Minister expressed interest in visiting our reserve lands in mid-October 2025. - Hon. Spencer Chandra Herbert, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation
We requested support for funding the Ancient Forest Project and sought advocacy at the federal level for our bridge infrastructure needs. - Hon. Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
We asked the Ministry to provide early guidance and support for transporting equipment for our upcoming wind power projects. - Hon. Jagrup Brar, Minister of State for Mining and Minerals
We requested assistance during the mobilization phase of our wind energy projects. The Minister also shared updates on two upcoming mining projects within our territory, assuring us of full environmental assessments. - Hon. Jodie Wickens, Minister of Children and Family Development
We presented our need for a Family Centre to support local families and requested funding from the Ministry to move this initiative forward. - Hon. Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests
We addressed the impacts of mill closures in northern BC and advocated alongside the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, Valemount, and Mackenzie for reopening key backcountry roads to support access and economic activity. - Bobbi Plecas, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure
We provided an update on the approval of our design funding and requested construction funding for our bridge project. - Ciro Panessa (CEO, Northern Health) & Debra Toporowski (Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health)
We requested a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) be seconded from Northern Health to enhance medical support for our community members. - Tara Faganello, Associate Deputy Minister, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and HousingWe inquired about land availability within the City of Prince George for off-reserve housing and requested funding support for the construction phase.
