Marvin F. George
Marvin is Wet’suwet’en. He is Gilseyhu (Big Frog Clan) and a member of “Yikh Tso’wi’tan (Thin House). He graduated from Prince George Senior Secondary School in 1967. He went on to the BC Vocational School in Victoria and received a diploma in Topographical Drafting in 1969. He immediately took a drafting position with the BC Ministry of Forests (Prince George Regional Office) and was the Regional Drafting Supervisor when he left in 1983 to take a position with the Gitxsan-Carrier Tribal Council.
With the Gitxsan-Carrier Tribal Council his responsibility was to research and map the territories of the Kuldo, Kisgagass, Kispiox, Gitanmax, Kitseguecla, Gitwangak and Wet’suwet’en peoples. He was an expert witness in the Delgam Uukw Court Case, which finally resulted in a defining the steps required to prove aboriginal title and that aboriginal title exists and that oral history is now admissible in the court of law (a big win!). His responsibilities also included being the Wet’suwet’en representative in the Community Based Governance negotiation between Canada, the Gitxsan representatives (4) and Wet’suwet’en. These negotiation went to the Agreement In Principle stage and if ratified would have given the House groups legal status and capacity. It was never ratified because we entered into the BC Treaty Process at that time and governance was one of the chapters to be negotiated.
He worked with the Office of the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief from 1996 to 1999 in Moricetown as the Natural Resources Manager and was a member of their treaty negotiation team.
He is now employed as a Negotiator with the Lheidli T’enneh Treaty Office and attends all Chief Negotiators, Main Table Working Group meetings and is the Lheidli T’enneh representative at a number of side tables (Implementation Working Group, Lands Technical Working Group). He co-chairs the Regional Wildlife Management Process meetings (Lheidli T’enneh, other first nation and third parties tasked with managing wildlife in this region).
